Samsung and AccendoWave Help Hospitals Distract Patients From Pain

Southern Hills Hospital, a leading Las Vegas medical center, sought better ways to gauge and ease patient pain, especially in its busy emergency and orthopedic-spine units. To pilot a cutting-edge discomfort management approach, the hospital worked with Samsung (in partnership with AccendoWave) to test new patient distraction and assessment technology using Samsung Galaxy tablets and the Knox Custom Toolkit.

Over a six-month pilot, Southern Hills deployed AccendoWave’s EEG-based platform on Samsung Galaxy tablets to deliver real-time discomfort readings plus diversionary content (games, music, 300 hours of clips and DIRECTV movies). Nearly 1,000 patients used the solution; of 334 survey responses processed, 90% enjoyed it, 81% said it made them more comfortable, 77% said it understood their discomfort and 87% liked the content. Samsung’s devices and Knox provisioning enabled secure, durable delivery of the program, and Southern Hills is expanding the initiative and exploring clinical uses of the data.
