Inova Mount Vernon Hospital improves ER care with Samsung’s VR kits in 2 departments

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, a community hospital in Virginia, sought non-pharmacological methods to reduce patient anxiety and pain in its emergency department. The challenge was to introduce a convenient and clinically valuable technological innovation into this high-stress environment without overburdening the staff. Strategy and growth officer Thomas Pianta identified virtual reality as a potential solution and engaged vendor Samsung for the hardware.

The solution implemented used Samsung's Knox Custom Configurator to lock down Samsung Gear VR headsets and Galaxy smartphones, creating dedicated AppliedVR kits for patient distraction. The results included improved pain management, a reduced need for medication, a better patient experience, and lower associated costs. The vendor, Samsung, provided the secure, consumer-grade technology that made this scalable VR healthcare intervention possible.
