Houston Independent School District (HISD), the largest school district in Texas with about 280 schools and more than 17,000 legacy analog cameras, needed to migrate a sprawling, coax‑based security estate to modern IP video to improve student and staff safety across new and existing campuses. To support that transition and replace obsolete Windows XP‑based servers, HISD worked with Salient Systems, leveraging Salient’s VMS and the Power Ultra storage/recording hardware as part of a multi‑year district‑wide upgrade.

Salient Systems deployed its VMS at the head end and rolled out Power Ultra servers to replace legacy systems, giving each server capacity for more than 200 IP cameras and roughly twice the processing/storage horsepower for future growth. The migration—being coordinated with HISD IT and a 24/7 security operations center—enables real‑time 24/7 server monitoring (replacing manual morning checks), remote troubleshooting, higher‑resolution live views and greater scalability as new schools come online, delivering measurable gains in operational efficiency and system reliability.
