National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) - Customer Case Study

National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) needed a faster, more flexible way to manage organ allocation schemes so it could maximize equity and utility across the UK transplant system. With organ donation and matching processes growing more complex, NHSBT turned to vendor Salient Process’s IBM business process software, including IBM Business Process Manager on Cloud, IBM Operational Decision Manager on Cloud, and IBM Blueworks Live, to better capture workflows and adapt rules quickly.

Salient Process helped NHSBT build a rules-based, cloud-based platform that streamlined organ allocation changes, simplified process management, and improved operational agility. The new approach supported the first heart transplant allocated under a new scheme and set the stage for a future liver allocation model expected to increase transplants by about 50 per year, while also helping NHSBT maximize use of donated organs and free up resources to focus on its mission.
