A Salesforce for Nonprofits Case Study
The San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SF SPCA), a pioneer of the No‑Kill movement, launched Vision 2020 to end animal abandonment in San Francisco. To scale rescue, prevention, and education efforts, the organization needed to move off Excel and paper—its surrender call center, volunteer coordination, and Community Cat program lacked real‑time data and coordinated workflows.
Using Salesforce (Service Cloud, App Cloud and the Nonprofit Starter Pack), SF SPCA built a call‑center case system, a custom volunteer app (Sojournal) to manage ~5,000 animals and 1,700 volunteers, and a Community Cat tracker with heat maps for 6,000 cats. The changes enabled real‑time crisis counseling that kept more than 350 animals out of shelters, faster medical follow‑up, smoother adoptions, expanded outreach and foundation funding, and thousands of volunteer hours (including 8,000+ from Salesforce employees).
