Salesforce Employees use Volunteer Time Off to build schools with Surf For Life

Surf For Life is a nonprofit that partners with local communities to design and build community-owned health and education projects—schools, clinics, and community centers—aimed at making tourism more beneficial. A key challenge they face is geographic isolation: in places like El Manzano Uno, Nicaragua, students typically stop attending after 6th grade because the nearest secondary school is over 60 miles away.

To address this, Salesforce employees use Volunteer Time Off and Salesforce.org support (including Sales Cloud and the Nonprofit Starter Pack) while the Foundation provides team grants and donation matching. That combined volunteer labor and funding—more than 27,417 volunteer hours and $775K+ in grants—has enabled projects such as a new high school in El Manzano Uno (completed after 1,200 volunteer hours), giving local students the chance to continue their education.
