Project 8 Is Helping the World Anticipate the Needs of 8 Billion People and Beyond

Project 8 is a partnership between the United Nations Foundation and The Demand Institute that created a digital commons to centralize and democratize diverse datasets on how human demand for food, water, energy and other needs is changing as the world approaches 8 billion people. The core challenge was fragmented, hard-to-access data that made it difficult for researchers and practitioners to anticipate and plan for shifting global needs.

Using Salesforce Einstein Analytics, App Cloud and Community Cloud, with implementation support from Accenture and pro bono help from Salesforce employees, Project 8 built an intuitive, scalable platform where experts can discover, analyze and discuss data without specialized statistical software—and access it from the field or on mobile. Launched at the UN General Assembly in 2015, the tool broadened data access, accelerated collaboration across sectors and made actionable insights more visible to policymakers and practitioners, helping improve planning for global demand.
