Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is a community-owned power company in Northern California known for innovative energy programs. After an audit raised concerns about unstructured data and manual, paper-based onboarding and access requests, SMUD needed a way to automatically enable and disable employee access and implement comprehensive identity governance.

SMUD deployed SailPoint to manage user access privileges, automate onboarding/offboarding and other manual processes, and extend governance to unstructured data for compliance. As a result, SMUD now automates its identity processes, monitors employee access to applications and systems, and has clear visibility into where sensitive files reside and who is accessing them.
