Sandvik Switches from Spreadsheets to an Integrated EHS Solution

Sandvik Mining & Rock Technology (SMRT), a global supplier in the mining sector, struggled with a sprawling, spreadsheet-based EHS reporting system—76 interlinked files and over a million calculations—that was time-consuming, insecure, and limited its ability to use data qualitatively to drive cultural change and better risk management.

SMRT implemented SAI Global’s configurable EHS platform (rolled out 2008–2010) to capture both lagging and leading indicators and create “EHS League Tables” for meaningful, comparable metrics. The solution helped change behavior and improve performance: Total Recordable Injury Rate fell from 19.6 to 4.0, Lost Time Injury Frequency is now below 1.0, hazard close-out improved 59%→98%, hazards identified rose 200%, EHS plan completion is ~93%, compliance moved from 40% to ~80%, and 88% of employees rate the EHS culture strong or very strong.
