A SafetySkills Case Study
USAMRIID, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases, needed to support cleanup of the highly contaminated Brentwood Post Office after the 2001 anthrax attacks. Because OSHA required a 72-hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Onsite Incident Commander certification, and the scientists already had much of the needed experience, they needed a faster path to compliance. SafetySkills was brought in to help deliver the required training quickly.
SafetySkills conducted a gap analysis of job descriptions and training records, then created and delivered an abbreviated program that met the OSHA requirement in only 16 hours instead of 72. This cut training from two weeks to two days, reduced logistics delays, and helped USAMRIID personnel report to the cleanup site within 21 days. The result was more than $10 million in training cost savings and a 77% reduction in training time.
