U.S. Naval Air Station Keflavik - Customer Case Study

U.S. Naval Air Station Keflavik (NASKEF) needed specialized hazardous materials response training for its firefighting teams. As a NATO refueling stop and a potential Space Shuttle emergency landing site, the base had to prepare responders for hydrazine—a highly toxic, corrosive, and flammable fuel used by F-16 emergency power units and spacecraft—while also dealing with Iceland’s harsh weather conditions that made standard HAZMAT procedures difficult.

SafetySkills worked with Navy officials and the Keflavik Fire Team to adapt the training curriculum and safe operating guidelines for hydrazine response, and to develop alternative procedures and equipment that could function in extreme wind, snow, and precipitation. The result was a customized, practical training solution tailored to NASKEF’s unique operational and environmental risks, helping ensure responders were better prepared for real-world emergencies.
