Vertex3 helps universities turn disparate CAD drawings into a campus-wide, seamless geodatabase so facility managers can access accurate floorplans, basemaps and archives. The challenge was integrating large volumes of CAD data into GIS, keeping it synchronized with ongoing CAD edits, and making interior spaces usable for mapping and facilities workflows.

Vertex3 built FME Desktop workflows and scripts (the Floorplan Sync Engine) to load CAD changes into a SQL Server staging area, run quality checks, and incrementally update the GIS on a scheduled basis, with an option to run on FME Cloud. The solution has been deployed at multiple universities—e.g., the University of Washington mapped 1,700 floors and 24 million sq ft—and is being extended to web apps and automated routing tied to a geodatabase network dataset; Vertex3 has delivered similar GIS solutions to over 50 clients since 2009.
