Socrata, a cloud software company that provides open data solutions for digital government, partnered with the City of New Orleans to solve a data automation challenge: the city needed to automatically retrieve economic indicator data from government APIs (Census, BLS, BEA) to track performance measures, benchmark against peer cities, and meet Bloomberg Fund reporting requirements.

Socrata built FME workflows that pull data from the various APIs, translate it into flat, machine‑readable tables, convert and calculate into the required data model, and publish results to the city’s open data portal. The automated, easy‑to‑maintain workflows make updates simple (e.g., publishing new ACS data by changing one parameter), let the city tell its story and compare with other localities, and ensure compliance with reporting obligations.
