Pelmorex Media Inc., owner of The Weather Network and MétéoMédia, operates the Pelmorex Lightning Detection Network (PLDN) to monitor millions of lightning strikes across Canada. The challenge was delivering near real-time and archived strike data—converted from raw lat/long queries—across a vast territory to insurers, utilities, government agencies and transportation companies without building a lengthy custom system.

By deploying FME Server, Pelmorex quickly restructured and streamed strike data into styled KML and other formats for Google Earth, ArcGIS viewers, email alerts and more, with updates every 20–30 seconds. The solution was implemented in about three weeks, supports epoch-to-standard time conversion and SQL Server archiving, gives clients immediate details (location, type, polarity) for fast action, and has freed staff to automate other resource-intensive tasks.
