A Safe Software Case Study
The Surveyor General Branch of Natural Resources Canada manages dynamic geospatial data across 48 databases in 32 projections and multiple formats (SHP, ArcSDE, DWG, SQL Server). Their challenge was to consolidate diverse datasets, denormalize database information for business intelligence, detect and report data errors, and deliver a range of outputs to users and services—without tying up staff during business hours.
They used FME Desktop to build and schedule automated overnight workflows that pull and transform data, identify errors, denormalize for BI, and produce KML, DWG, Shapefiles, and map-service updates while sending success/failure notifications. The result: by the time staff arrive each morning the data is consolidated, errors flagged, and outputs are ready for use—saving time and keeping web apps and map services current.
