A Safe Software Case Study
Kartverket, Norway’s national mapping authority responsible for geographic information and the property registry, turned a kids’ hackathon project into a deliberate test bed for an upcoming cloud-based open data portal. The challenge was to experiment with delivering real spatial data at scale and to learn how a cloud service would behave under unpredictable public demand—without preplanning hardware or risking critical systems.
In partnership with Safe partner Sweco they used FME Cloud on AWS to convert PostGIS terrain and supporting datasets into on-demand Minecraft worlds; after going public the service drew media attention and peaked at 1,000 worlds generated in an hour. The exercise gave the team practical insight into support needs and burst capacity, validated the cloud approach as a safe, flexible trial run, and provided a foundation for rolling out official data through a cloud-based open data portal.
