Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) - Customer Case Study

The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation needed to replace its Google Earth plug-in–based Kansas Airspace Awareness Tool and took the opportunity to expand its functionality and data. With the impending deprecation of the plug-in, KDOT required a new Cesium-based interface that could better support visualization and regulatory checks for aviation and infrastructure planning across the state.

KDOT repurposed existing FME Desktop workspaces and FME Server configurations to build the new KDOT Aviation Portal on Cesium, enabling users to browse datasets and view 3D airspace polygons, then interactively place proposed structures (like wind farms) to perform preliminary FAA checks. FME Server handles user requests, nightly FAA obstruction updates, and multi-format data hosted on Amazon (GeoJSON, CZML, KML, Collada, WMS), delivering a modern, data-rich tool that streamlines regulatory screening and data management.
