IOWADot needed a way to help the public make safer travel decisions during winter conditions, but its traffic operations, snowplow, bridge camera, and other public safety data were spread across multiple applications. Working with Safe Software and FME, the agency set out to make real-time transportation data easier to access and share in user-friendly formats.

Safe Software helped IOWADot build no-code FME workflows and a custom API library with Esri Road & Highways to unify XML traffic feeds, transform the data, and publish it through formats like Oracle Spatial, ArcGIS Online REST Services, email, and JSON/XML. The result was a live-update map and public-facing data services that improved access to real-time information, with one map even used by a local TV news station for live updates.
