The Iowa Department of Transportation’s maintenance office struggled with disparate, non‑spatial data across multiple systems (ArcGIS, GeoMedia, Oracle, etc.), leaving mile posts and road segments out of sync with the resource management system (RMS). This made it difficult to plan, report and track field work accurately—updates required a convoluted manual process that took about three hours each time road segments changed.

Using FME Desktop, the GIS team built automated workflows to pull, clean, validate and georeference mile‑post data from multiple sources, generate unique segment IDs, and run quality checks before updating the RMS. The automation cut processing from hours to under a minute, produced accurate, color‑coded responsibility maps for all 109 garages, reduced field data errors and support calls, and enabled faster, more confident planning and tracking of roadway projects.
