Iowa DOT - Customer Case Study

The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT), which maintains over 9,400 miles of roadway and 4,092 bridges, wanted to make the near-real-time situational awareness they use internally available to the public through a plowcam portal. Their challenge was delivering frequent, up-to-date plow locations and camera images without overloading their Oracle databases or building a custom ingestion pipeline.

Using FME Server with ArcGIS Online, Oracle, KML, and Microsoft Azure, the DOT now retrieves active plow data every minute, generates KML files, uploads them to Azure, and lets AGOL build the public map refreshed at regular intervals. The result is a public site that helps drivers check conditions before travel, supports media and weather outlets sharing images, and accelerated rollout by offloading processing from Oracle and avoiding custom code.
