A Safe Software Case Study
Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) is a regional wastewater utility serving 17 Virginia cities and counties that needed to build a regional hydraulic model to meet new DEQ sanitary sewer overflow reduction requirements. The project required centralizing pipeline and pump station data from HRSD plus 14 localities, but past manual quality control and data-cleanup efforts were too slow and resource-intensive, so HRSD sought an automated, web-based way for localities to submit validated, standardized data.
HRSD implemented Safe Software’s FME Server to create an online upload, validation and loading service: published FME workflows run geometric and attribute checks, generate concise correction reports for failed submissions, and automatically load validated data into HRSD’s ESRI SDE database. The system eliminated weeks of manual work, reduced ongoing update time to minutes, lowered implementation cost versus a custom build, and provided a scalable, maintainable process HRSD can extend to other data-sharing needs.
