Georgia Power, the largest of four electric utilities within Southern Company, needed to streamline repetitive data tasks for its Community and Economic Development Group — including location comparisons, site analysis, and routine site updates — that were time-consuming and error-prone when done manually. The team faced challenges converting disparate spreadsheets and text files into usable records, performing spatial calculations on parcels, and identifying sites that hadn’t been updated in over a year.

They implemented FME workflows to automate data conversion into an MS Access database and reports, run spatial analyses (nearby facilities/utilities, usable acres, parcel scoring), and pull records from their SDE Oracle to email representatives for updates. The automation saves hours of manual work, improves data accuracy and delivery to end users, and increased the number of sites updated in the past year.
