Case Study: Geonovum achieves accessible, automated 3D data generation and national standard adoption with Safe Software

A Safe Software Case Study

Preview of the Geonovum Case Study

Geonovum - Customer Case Study

Geonovum, the Netherlands’ National Spatial Data Infrastructure Executive Committee, developed a national 3D standard but faced a challenge: their open‑source tools for creating and validating 3D data were not easily usable by non‑developers. The project was a joint effort with Kadaster, the Netherlands Geodetic Commission, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, Safe Software and partners con terra, Vicrea, and Red Geographics to make the standard practical for everyday users.

Using FME, Geonovum published preconfigured workspaces that let users pick a few parameters (data type, theme, level of detail) to automatically generate 3D geometry from 2D data and high‑resolution LiDAR, outputting geometries and attributes to the national standard with minimal intervention. The FME interface broadened access and accelerated adoption of the standard, enabling better 3D analysis for urban planning—improving insight into shadowing, noise, rooftop gardening potential and other city planning needs.
