Case Study: Esri achieves a web-accessible, geo-referenced BIM-GIS 3D world for Mount Vernon with Safe Software's FME

Esri - Customer Case Study

Esri, Mount Vernon, and Quinn Evans Architects partnered to create a blended BIM–GIS 3D model of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. Their challenge was to integrate many rich datasets and geo-reference architectural Revit/IFC models—aligning project north with true north—and preserve accurate attribution so the historic mansion and outbuildings could be analyzed and maintained in context.

Using the FME-based ArcGIS Data Interoperability Extension, they added coordinates and rotation to Revit data, exported and linked attributes via a spreadsheet, and imported the results into ArcGIS to produce a seamless 3D world. Stakeholders now access detailed site and structure data in a browser for planning and web maintenance, and perform contextual analyses (for example, viewshed analysis) to protect vistas and inform preservation decisions.
