Donegal County - Customer Case Study

Donegal County Council (Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall), which serves the Atlantic coast of northwestern Ireland, needed a reliable way to deliver storm alerts, road gritting routes, and weather reports to the public. The challenge was to turn routine engineer updates and external weather data into geolocated, easy-to-interpret information for residents and staff.

Using FME Desktop, they built workflows that geocode tweets from parsed route numbers, produce a GeoRSS feed, and display everything on a public online map; engineers simply reuse predefined tweets. They later integrated the Norwegian Met Office XML feed and added an FME workspace to check forecasts and automatically tweet storm alerts for severe conditions within 12 hours, scheduled twice daily in winter and once daily otherwise. The system improved communication and usability—“Everyone’s happy! The engineers are happy, the public is happy, and we have maps to communicate the information as clearly as possible.”
