Devon Energy, a leading independent onshore oil and gas producer in North America, needed to convert directional well survey data given as surface offsets (angles and depths) into accurate Cartesian coordinates to map wellbores across their geoscience database.

Using Safe Software’s FME, Devon converts azimuth, inclination and measured depth into XYZ coordinates and writes the results back to the geoscience database with XY and lat/lon offsets for each station. The workflow supports batch processing, enables 2D and 3D mapping of all surveys, reduces reliance on external calculations, and gives Devon in-house control and confidence in wellbore locations.
