A Safe Software Case Study
The City of Surrey, British Columbia’s second-largest and one of its most culturally diverse cities, publishes 400 open datasets but struggled with the limitations of its CKAN portal: only a few download formats were supported and whole-dataset downloads could be terabytes, making it hard for residents, businesses, and staff to get precise, usable data for specific areas or applications.
Safe Software’s FME Server was implemented to provide on‑demand exports from the production database in a wide range of formats (LAS, JSON, KML, File Geodatabase, DWG, CSV, MrSID, PDF, and more) and a map preview to select exact subsets. The result: faster, cheaper access for the public and staff, greater usability for small businesses and civic projects, and improved socio-economic benefits from more accessible open data.
