The City of Calgary, Alberta’s largest city with over 1 million residents, needed to derive building elevation points from a LiDAR scan covering roughly 400,000 buildings so inspectors could rapidly assess flood risk and impacts.

Using Safe Software’s FME, the team converted the LiDAR to a DEM, integrated it with a multipatch geodatabase, and automated calculations to extract each building’s lowest, highest ground, and highest building elevations. The workflow saved significant time and effort, and inspectors now have quick access to the lowest elevation point for each building to speed flood assessments.
