A Safe Software Case Study
California Earthquake Authority (CEA) is a publicly managed, privately funded non-profit that provides affordable earthquake insurance for California homeowners. To protect policyholders and speed claims response, CEA must know immediately when an earthquake occurs that could cause property damage.
CEA uses the USGS ShakeMap feed and FME Cloud to monitor incoming alerts; when new maps appear the cloud service triggers an FME Desktop workflow that reads the ShakeMap GeoJSON, flags earthquakes of damaging magnitude in California, extracts shaking-intensity data from relevant shapefiles, and generates an Excel report that is emailed to stakeholders within minutes. The claims team now receives near–real-time event reports, and by running FME in the cloud CEA avoids maintaining servers and pays only for the processing it uses.
