Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - Customer Case Study

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the federal agency responsible for Brazil's statistical, geographic and environmental information, was tasked with producing a nationwide map at 1:250,000 to support strategic and environmental planning. The project required consolidating and validating data from five disparate sources and delivering outputs that met both government and industry specifications while keeping the dataset current.

IBGE used FME Desktop and Server to merge, transform, validate and publish the map, automating workflows that update two separate databases—one formatted for government use and one for industry. The automation reduced the team needed from an estimated 30 people to 3, enabled nationwide sharing, and makes it easy to reproduce the project at other scales (e.g., 1:1,000,000 or 1:1,000) with minimal workflow changes.
