A Safe Software Case Study
BC Transit, the provincial public transit agency based in Victoria, BC, struggled with decades of transit data held in separate, customized systems—bus stops, vehicles, schedules, routes and ridership were siloed. That fragmentation made routine data preparation slow and error-prone (taking days or weeks), limited insight into operational relationships, and hindered innovation and smarter service planning needed to grow ridership.
Using Safe Software’s FME Desktop, a small team built a spatial data management system that links and validates those disparate datasets and provides automated, repeatable workflows. Tasks like bus-stop naming, route building and schedule integration were cut from days or weeks to minutes, enabled GTFS/Google Transit publishing, and produced spatial-temporal visualizations that improved decision-making, service quality and supported increased ridership.
