Case Study: Arup achieves actionable spatial insights from a complex commuter survey with Safe Software

Arup - Customer Case Study

Arup, a global multidisciplinary firm behind iconic projects like the Sydney Opera House and the Øresund Link, was commissioned to turn a client’s annual commuter travel survey into actionable spatial intelligence. The raw data arrived as a confusing 250-column Excel spreadsheet with coded responses and unclear geographic references, making it unusable for analysis.

Using FME Desktop, Arup built workflows to clean non‑geographic fields, create spatial points from survey locations, and export the results to PostgreSQL, QGIS, and an interactive dashboard. The outcome is a rich, spatially enabled dataset that delivers clear, interactive insights to help the client manage limited vehicle access to their campus.
