The University of Texas at Austin Solar Decathlon team needed funds to produce a documentary of its 2015 Solar Decathlon project and to engage cross-campus stakeholders; they also had a $10,000 matching-gift challenge to unlock. To run the crowdfunding effort the University used Ruffalo Noel Levitz’s ScaleFunder platform (branded on campus as “Hornraiser”) to present the project, suggested giving levels, and incentives.

Using Ruffalo Noel Levitz’s ScaleFunder, the team launched a gamified, tiered campaign promoted via academic partners, social media and email; the effort raised $21,422 from 99 donors (median gift $50), securing the full $10,000 matching gift. Nearly 90% of gifts fell on suggested levels (with $100 the most popular), about half the gifts arrived in the year-end week, and the campaign succeeded in funding the planned documentary and engaging new donors.
