Unfailing Wi-Fi connects America’s Cup Italian team on land, sea and air

Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli, Italy’s Challenger of Record for the 36th America’s Cup, needed uncompromising connectivity to support design, testing and racing of its revolutionary 75‑foot AC75 hydrofoil—boats that fly at speeds near 50 knots. The team required low‑latency, high‑throughput, secure Wi‑Fi that would work reliably in hostile maritime conditions (hangars, carbon hulls, gusting winds), maintain continuous data flows between shore and boats up to two miles apart, and allow rapid relocation of operations to New Zealand.

CommScope RUCKUS delivered a mix of adaptive‑antenna APs, mesh backhaul, RUCKUS Cloud management and Cloudpath enrollment to provide resilient on‑board and shore connectivity, secure automated device onboarding and fast redeployment. The solution enabled a continuous design/test feedback loop, real‑time telemetry between vessels, five low‑latency broadcast channels, gigabytes of data backhauled to shore, support for hundreds of sensors and ~35 devices on board, and the ability to get systems back online in New Zealand in hours while maintaining tight security.
