Transforming Cancer Research with A New Network Model

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR) built the Cancer Genome Collaboratory to give authorized researchers fast access to huge cancer-genome datasets, but their existing HPC-based approach forced long, costly file transfers and limited flexibility. OICR needed a high-density, cost-effective, easily scalable network with high port density to move massive files from storage to compute on demand in a compact footprint.

OICR deployed Brocade Ruckus ICX 7750 switches (12 in a ring with stacking, 10GBase‑T and 40GbE uplinks), delivering 15 PB of storage and 3,000 compute cores while allowing easy rack-by-rack expansion. The new network enabled on-demand file transfers, self-service research environments, faster and more stable workloads, and the ability to analyze many patients across projects—accelerating research and earning positive researcher feedback as the Collaboratory scales globally.
