Ruckus Wireless Enables Kiel to Be a Smart City

The City of Kiel teamed with local operator ADDIX Internet Services to launch Smart City Wi‑Fi during Kiel Week, one of the world’s largest sailing events. Their challenge was to provide free, user‑friendly broadband across high‑density public areas—supporting millions of visitors and tens of thousands of concurrent users—after prior temporary or inadequate Wi‑Fi attempts proved unreliable under heavy load.

ADDIX selected Ruckus and deployed ZoneFlex 7782‑N and T300 access points with BeamFlex+ antennas, installing the network in two weeks to cover stages, gardens and event sites. The solution supported more than 50,000 simultaneous users, enabled seamless roaming, powered the Walk & Explore Kiel app and live streaming, and now serves as the backbone for Kiel’s ongoing city WLAN while attracting interest from other major events.
