Midwest Surgical Gets Healthy Dose of Smart Wi-Fi to Improve Quality of Patient Treatment

Midwest Surgical Hospital, a physician-owned specialty facility in Omaha with six operating rooms, 19 overnight beds and more than 30 physicians and 50 staff, needed a centrally managed, HIPAA‑compliant wireless network that eliminated dead spots, supported delay‑sensitive EHR and VoIP applications, and required minimal IT overhead. The hospital faced a challenging RF environment (metal, mirrors and changing conditions), limited IT resources, and strict security and guest‑networking requirements.

Midwest deployed a Ruckus ZoneDirector 1025 controller with 16 ZoneFlex 2942 APs, leveraging smart antennas, automatic RF management, multiple SSIDs/VLANs and AES authentication. The result was “wire‑like” Wi‑Fi with complete coverage and eliminated dropouts, support for voice, video and data, reduced administration and trouble calls, HIPAA compliance, lower cost than alternatives and a platform ready to add Spectralink Wi‑Fi phones.
