Preview of the City of San Jose Case Study

City of San Jose delivers free Wi-Fi to nearly 1 million residents with RUCKUS

The City of San José, a major city of nearly one million residents, faced the challenge of a significant digital divide, with nearly 100,000 residents lacking high-speed internet access. To achieve its Smart City Vision and deliver free broadband to every resident, the city partnered with RUCKUS Networks. The challenge included providing seamless Wi-Fi across diverse locations including the airport, convention center, school districts, and public spaces.

RUCKUS Networks implemented a solution utilizing its indoor and outdoor APs, ICX switches, SmartZone Network Controller, Cloudpath Enrollment System, and RUCKUS AI. The network was deployed on city-owned infrastructure like street light poles and traffic lights to broadcast free Wi-Fi, particularly in low-income neighborhoods. The results included seamless signal handoff for users moving between locations, a compact and aesthetically pleasing high-density solution, fast deployment, and a network that is easy to manage and control, ultimately allowing all residents to partake in the region's culture of innovation.
