A RUCKUS Networks Case Study
Monheim am Rhein, a progressive German city of about 43,000 residents, set out to build a comprehensive public Wi‑Fi network as the backbone for smart‑city services (retailer portal, smart lighting) and to strengthen its appeal to businesses. The city needed carrier‑grade, high‑concurrency coverage that was stable across challenging urban areas while keeping access points unobtrusive and minimizing investment and maintenance costs.
After evaluating vendors Monheim chose Ruckus Wireless, deploying ZoneFlex T300 outdoor and R510 indoor APs with BeamFlex and ChannelFly, managed by a SmartZone controller and secured via Cloudpath. The initial rollout (105 APs at 20 sites, with a plan for 500 APs at 200 locations and ~5,000 daily users) delivers free internet across much of the city, reduced hardware needs (20–30% fewer APs), fast installation, a retailer Wi‑Fi portal and a future‑proof platform for ongoing smart‑city projects.
