Case Study: US Internet achieves reliable citywide Minneapolis Wi‑Fi and 50% lower installation costs with RUCKUS Networks

A RUCKUS Networks Case Study

Preview of the US Internet Case Study

Building a City-Wide Wi-Fi Network in Minneapolis from the Outside In

US Internet, founded in 1995, grew from a local dial‑up ISP into a provider with points of presence in over 4,000 cities and was selected by the City of Minneapolis to build a 60‑square‑mile “Wireless Minneapolis” municipal Wi‑Fi network—a $20M project deploying roughly 2,000 nodes. The company’s biggest challenge was end‑user connectivity: in‑home CPE had to deliver reliable upstream links in a cold, interference-prone environment while remaining low‑cost, self‑installable and remotely manageable.

US Internet standardized on the Ruckus MetroFlex (with BeamFlex smart antennas) and adopted a CPE‑first deployment strategy. The preconfigured, self‑installable modems provided consistent high uplink speeds, automatic interference avoidance, remote management and firmware updates, which sped installations, eliminated many truck rolls and reduced installation/support costs by roughly 50%, improving uptime and the subscriber experience.
