The University of Southampton, a Russell Group research institution with over 30,000 students and 8,000 staff, was modernizing its IT but constrained by a legacy, agent‑based backup solution that was complex to manage, required a full‑time administrator, didn’t scale for virtual workloads, and resulted in recovery times measured in days.

By deploying Rubrik’s cloud‑native platform and archiving to Microsoft Azure, the university consolidated backup, disaster recovery and archival into one easy‑to‑use solution. The move cut RTOs from days to minutes, reduced management to about 10 minutes per day (eliminating the dedicated FTE), enabled point‑in‑time SQL restores and live mounts, extended retention from 3 to 6 months in Azure, passed DR tests, and significantly shrank its data‑center footprint.
