Increase Waste Diversion While Cutting Costs and Improving Facility Equipment

Media and Cable Service Providing Company partnered with Rubicon to improve waste management at its media printing facility, where costs were high, equipment was unreliable, and trash diversion was low. The company also needed to support a broader zero-waste-to-landfill initiative across more than 400 locations, while optimizing pickup frequency, recycling equipment, and sustainability tracking.

Rubicon implemented a two-compactor solution, including a dedicated compactor for overissued newspapers and another for single-stream recycling, after analyzing the facility’s waste stream in person. The result was a 98% diversion rate at the pilot location, reduced hauling fees, better right-sized equipment, improved service optimization, and Gold Level Certification—the highest zero-waste certification, making the site the first newspaper to achieve it.
