A Ruan Case Study
Land O’Lakes, a food and agriculture cooperative, faced rising DOT compliance, liability and safety burdens from operating a private fleet and lacked the in-house expertise to develop a long-term maintenance and fleet strategy. After evaluating costs and transition risks, the company decided to convert its private fleet to a dedicated contract carriage arrangement with Ruan to find a better, more efficient solution.
Ruan provided DCC services, retaining more than 80% of Land O’Lakes’ drivers, securing specialized equipment for a fast Lake City start-up and reducing fleet size by 14% while moving the same volume of product. The partnership eliminated service interruptions, freed Land O’Lakes to focus on core business and delivered immediate savings of about $500,000 in FY2008 (≈2.8% of an $18M transportation budget), plus an additional $716,000 over the next two years with further optimizations under evaluation.
