A RtTech Software Case Study
New Gold’s New Afton mine in British Columbia set out to embed energy management into daily operations as part of a broader strategy for lower‑cost, sustainable mining. Facing high energy costs and the ISO 50001 requirement for an Energy Management Information System (EMIS), the site needed a comprehensive metering and reporting solution and a program that would become self‑sustaining across the organization.
RtTech’s RtEMIS was chosen for its industrial experience and seamless integration with the site’s PI historian, and was deployed on a six‑month fast track. RtEMIS now monitors 157 electrical sub‑meters, six gas meters and multiple Energy Account Centers, enabling accurate monthly cost allocation, rapid identification of inefficiencies (e.g., a 17% rise in energy per tonne when the pebble crusher was down), and measurable cost savings. In March 2014 New Afton became the first ISO 50001‑certified mine in North America.
