Flakeboard reduces energy consumption by nearly 7% with RtEMIS

Flakeboard, a leading North American manufacturer of composite wood panels, experienced rising energy costs after a period of production growth and needed better visibility into energy use across its many sub-mills. Working with Efficiency New Brunswick, the company ran an EMIS audit and pilot to define metering needs, establish baselines, and plan a phased implementation (budgeted at $270,000) to accurately attribute energy costs and determine ROI.

Flakeboard installed extensive sub‑metering (including 40 power quality meters plus gas, water and compressed air meters) and deployed RtEMIS to aggregate PLC/HMI data, segment energy by site/department/EAC, and deliver real‑time targets and cost metrics to users. The system drove a 6.6% reduction in energy consumption, $953,279 in savings over three years, a 1.2 MW monthly demand reduction, and a sustained cultural shift toward actively managing energy across the organization.
