Modernizing and Securing Today’s Transportation Infrastructure

GE Transportation, the rail division of GE, needed a standardized, secure connectivity solution for its next-generation locomotives and Rail Connect 360 initiative. With about 20 CPUs, more than 200 sensors per train, and data flowing from over 6,000 locomotives worldwide, the company wanted an open architecture that could unify multiple messaging systems, support third-party tools, and allow different levels of security for different functions. RTI Connext DDS was chosen to help meet these requirements.

RTI implemented Connext DDS Professional to manage train control, streaming, and sensor data across the control network and connect it with GE’s backend analytics environment. The solution replaced five separate messaging systems, improved safety and security, and gave GE Transportation a more modular and serviceable architecture. GE reported a 30% efficiency increase, along with a secure, open platform designed to support remote monitoring and future upgrades.
