A RTI Case Study
The European Defence Agency faced a challenge in improving multinational camp protection for coalition forces, where independently developed Camp Protection Systems from different nations and suppliers could not easily interoperate. RTI helped support the FICAPS project, which aimed to enable these systems to share sensors, cameras, and effectors across cable or satellite links with minimal integration effort.
RTI Connext DDS was used as the open standards connectivity middleware to implement the interoperability data model and connect German and French camp protection systems. The solution delivered scalable, high-performance data exchange, including one of the first public demonstrations of DDS streaming video, control data, and content data over a high-latency satellite link. The result was a validated approach to “pool and share” camp protection assets, reduce personnel and spare parts needs, lower test and validation costs, and improve flexibility and future procurement options.
