Case Study: Lockheed Martin modernizes Aegis with RTI Connext DDS

A RTI Case Study

Preview of the Lockheed Martin Case Study

Aegis Open Architecture Weapon System

Lockheed Martin partnered with RTI to support the U.S. Navy’s Aegis Open Architecture effort, which aimed to replace decades-old proprietary combat-system software with a modern, standards-based open architecture. The challenge was to create a messaging middleware approach that could support time-critical, mission-critical data across a highly distributed shipboard weapon system while insulating each subsystem from changes in adjacent subsystems.

RTI’s Connext DDS was selected after a nine-month evaluation of commercial DDS implementations, based on standards compliance, performance, lifecycle costs, and support. The solution enabled Lockheed Martin to meet the Aegis Open Architecture system’s realtime and scalability requirements, helping the company deliver on its cost and performance commitments to the U.S. Navy and supporting future technology upgrades for the Aegis fleet, which is deployed on 78 ships worldwide.
