Cypress Power partnered with the City of Kelowna’s Wastewater Treatment Facility — which processes up to 40 million litres per day for a community of over 100,000 — to address rapidly rising energy demand charges under a new utility billing structure. Facility staff lacked visibility into their energy use patterns, making it difficult to identify the causes of high peak demand and control costs.

Cypress Power overlaid a visual analytics layer onto the facility’s real-time energy monitoring and used a statistical modeling template to simulate time-shifting of individual loads. The simulations revealed that modest changes to equipment start times — and the elimination of redundant loads — could significantly reduce peak demand. The WWTF implemented these operational changes with no loss of service and lowered its demand costs as a result.
