AstraZeneca’s Scientific Computing Solutions team in the Advanced Analytics Centre needed a way to get simple, robust, user-friendly data science tools into the hands of non-experts across drug development. Applied data science at AstraZeneca sits at the intersection of scientific computing, statistical innovation, and biomedical informatics, and the team faced the challenge of standardizing methods and reducing complexity for hundreds of users.

They created a standardized R package for Bayesian probability-of-success calculations, deployed RStudio Server to ensure consistent tools and workflows for ~300 statisticians, and used Shiny Server Pro to deliver interactive apps to non-experts. The result was faster, reproducible analyses across the business—enabling exploration of historical trial data, interactive oncology trial design tools, and portfolio-level go/no-go decision support—while establishing a robust tool chain for routine tasks.
